5 millionth hit for the Unrepentant Marxist blog

Sometime yesterday I got the 5 millionth “hit” on my blog according to the page view widget displayed over to the right. A page view is defined by each page that is accessed by a visitor. The other key statistic is unique visitor. For example, I have had 807 page views so far and 495 unique visitors today. Generally, I get around a thousand page views a day and up to 2,000 on a good day. Since my first blog post was on July 1, 2004, the 5 million total sounds right.

The most page views for any post cumulatively was 62,991 for one on Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley and the perils of success  while the runner-up was 27,292 for Walter Rodney’s How Europe Underdeveloped Africa.

That first post was titled Reply to a Realo and took up the betrayal of the Demogreens:

In his ongoing capacity as chief ideologist of the Demogreen/Realo faction of the US Green Party, Ted Glick has an article on the Zmag website that talks about every aspect of the recently concluded Green Party convention except the politics. I will try to draw this out with bracketed comments on selected passages from his piece.

Thirteen years have passed and not much has changed apparently when it comes to the Green Party. Sigh.

When I first began writing longish posts on the Internet and maintaining an archive of them on my Columbia University website, I used to get invitations to contribute to leftist academic journals like “Capitalism, Nature and Socialism” or “Science and Society”. After running into some static from fickle editors, I decided to decline any such invitations in the future. The nice part of blogging is that you never receive a rejection notice. I learned long ago that it is best for me to write for myself and those foolish enough to take me seriously.

Shortly before I retired I was approached by the head of Verso Press in Brooklyn about writing a book about the American presidents written for a popular audience. Fortunately for me, he did not care for something I sent him about JFK that I had already written years earlier. What would be the point of spending two years doing nothing but researching and writing a 250 page book that would be remaindered in a year or so and that would pay me $5000 if I was lucky? I don’t need the money and much prefer to interact with my readers, something that is impossible when you are print-bound.

Since July 1, 2004, I have written 3,796 articles for my blog, averaging about 1,500 words. Since a 200-page book might contain 100,000 words typically, my output is somewhere in the vicinity of 50 books. All of it is probably unpublishable but who gives a shit? My goal has never been to enter the ranks of the literati and get invited to cocktail parties but to influence the left.

According to Alexa, I am rated 407,927 globally and 116,540 in the USA. For comparison’s sake, ZNet ranks 279,482 and 94,292 respectively. In terms of comparison with Marxist bloggers, I am not sure where to start. Part of the problem is that there are very few Marxist bloggers in the USA nowadays. When I began, there were dozens but most faded away. Of course, all the sects maintain websites but they are largely replacements for a newspaper. Socialist Alternative’s numbers are 375,486 and 93,966 while the ISO ranks 2,409,697 and 714,615. Somehow the ISO’s figures don’t sound right but who knows?

Although I am on FB and Twitter, I don’t really use them for serious debate or discussion. Mostly FB is for crossposting various articles, including my own. Twitter is strictly for crossposting my blog articles since I regard it as a septic tank by and large.

I started Marxmail on May 1, 1998 and that is my primary emphasis in terms of engaging with Marxists. Currently there are 1,535 subscribers and I would guess that about another 5,000 or so people read the archives each day. My blog has recorded 1,104,852 unique visitors since 2004. I imagine that only maybe 10 percent of them represent committed Marxists. That being the case, the effort has been worth it.

I’ll check back with you after 10,000,000 hits.

  1. Congratulations. I check The Unrepentant Marxist and Marxmail several times daily, and wouldn’t be without either. The range and detail of the coverage are amazing.

  2. Congratulations, Louis! You deserve it. You’ve always been my model of the independent, productive, cantankerous, supremely thoughtful, and unpredictable blogger. Without your example before me, I doubt I would have started blogging. Here’s to another five million hits! The work you do with the blog and Marxmail is immeasurably important. Keep it up.

  3. Many congratulations, Louis. Many millions more.

  4. You’re looking at the Alexa rating for the ISO, but the Socialist Worker web site is ranked 163,075 globally and 46,911 in the USA. That seems more appropriate.

  5. A well deserved boast – congratulations. Do you still have the camera you got a few years ago? I liked seeing NY through your videos.

  6. Would it be OK if I cross-posted this article to WriterBeat.com? There is no fee; I’m simply trying to add more content diversity for our community and I enjoyed reading your work. I’ll be sure to give you compflete credit as the author. If “OK” please let me know via email.
