A Return to Rockaway

This is a video I recorded last weekend in Rockaway, Queens—the epicenter of Hurricane Sandy. It is a follow-up to the video I made in November 2012, shortly after the hurricane had inflicted major damage in Rockaway including the deaths of local residents.

It is a report both on how the peninsula has recovered as well as the threats now posed by a natural gas pipeline being installed underneath Rockaway as part of a nationwide network built by the Williams Company, an outfit that can be described as the BP of natural gas pipelines.

  1. Wow. That was one of the more interesting and creative renditions of the rockaway pipeline project and I have actually seen a ton of them. The video was a wonderful warning about why people can’t just attend meetings run by lunatics whether on the beach as you captured from peter eliscu’s video or somewhere else and expect to come away with any understanding of reality. Williams had a couple of meetings in the area. Some were part of the FERC process. They occurred over the last two years.

  2. I’m obviously sympathetic to any fight against capitalist outfits like natural gas corporations, but honestly what’s the alternative to laying natural gas lines? Not having electricity? I remember Lenin saying “soviets + electrification = socialism.” He never said “soviets + untouched natural scenery = socialism.”

  3. The alternative is solar power, etc.
