Bill Maher on Obama

  1. Yes indeed. If such a thing can be asked for from any bourgeoise executive, Obama needs to step up to the bloody plate. An old friend of mine called me yesterday from Florida, dismayed at the folktales he’s hearing everywhere down there from the right wing talk shows and blogosphere, and telling me that is why he’s doing a 180 and lending Obama unconditional support. This is coming from somebody who used to study and work with Jimmy Boggs in Detroit. No critical perspective left, and so hungry that a speech as cosmetic as the one Obama gave in Cairo two weeks back seems to him the equivalence of the re-emergence of the non-aligned movement.

So yes, audacity would be good right now, if Obama were about anything at all, he ought to have been about pressing what political credibility he has to the utmost while he retains the support of the people who voted for him, and rallying that base. And if he were about such audacity, he sure as hell wouldn’t need Bill Maher to tell him about it. Obama would take the more difficult road that his alleged hero Lincoln took, provision Fort Sumter, as it were, defy the confederacy to do something about it, and make it clear to the public that the responsiblity for the conflict lays with an outdated ruling class dynasty. But he doesn’t have that kind of audaciousness in him, and he never did.

In the larger sense of Maher’s implication, he’s chosen instead to spend his administration running for re-election, and catering to the ruling class creeps who bought him the office. No one ought to be surprised.

  2. Much as I loathe his sexism and anti-medication stance,I actually agree with Maher here, but Hureaux, aren’t you forgetting about the African American community who supported him when you refer to the “ruling class creeps who bought him into office”?

  3. Nope. We are accountable for many of the ruling class creeps who put Obama into office. Some of the black old guard are in that mix, and the bureaucrats in our mainstream labor contingents (CBTU and APRI) and community leadership stood with the ruling elite and backed Obama.
